What is Ether-channel
  • It is also called Link Aggregation or Port-channel.
  • It helps you to combine or bundle multiple Physical links to a Single Logical Link.
Characteristics of Ether-Channel
  • Maximum of 8 physical Interfaces can be combined.
  • Duplex has to be the same.
  • Speed has to be there same.
  • Same native AND allowed VLANs.
  • Same switch-port mode (access or trunk).
Protocols for Ether-Channel
  • There are 2 Protocols used for Ether-channel
    • PAgP (Port Aggregation Protocol  -- Cisco Proprietary )
    • LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol  -- IEEE Standard)
PAgP Modes
  • PAgP offers 4 modes,
  • ON (It will not negotiate )
  • OFF (Off mode)
  • Auto (Interface will wait for other side to ask to become Ether-channel )
  • Desirable (Interface will actively ask for other side to become Ether-channel )
